In Formula 1™ performing at a high level is not enough. What’s required is peak performance.   The driver’s job is to push the car to the limit.   In an increasingly fast-paced business environment, the leader’s job is the same.  But how close to peak performance is your business unit or team and its key projects or priorities? 


What is Peak Performance?

A team is at Peak Performance when it is exploiting at least 75% of its full potential¹.  This 75%+ level is the zenith of performance – the equivalent of Formula One™ in motor racing.  We call it the Zone of Peak Performance™.

Operating at 90% of full potential that would be a considerable achievement.  To sustain that level of performance 80% of the time would be equally significant.  If you do the math, 90% by 80% would equate to an overall performance level of 72%.  Hence, the P2P Metric™ of 75%+ is a realistic and yet challenging threshold for the Zone of Peak Performance™.  Below that level, well that is not Peak Performance.

Introducing Performance Losses

Peak Performance is the exception, rather than the norm. It is realized by fewer than 1 in 20 teams².  In the day to day reality of organisations a myriad of factors can get in the way. The technical term for these factors is performance losses.

The factors that keep most business units, leader and teams out of the Zone of Peak Performance™ are called ‘Performance Losses’. These can be situational and structural, including factors, such as culture, leadership, environment and strategy.  They also include issues of skills, attitudes and behaviors.  Indeed, there are almost 200 factors in total³.

The Path to Peak Performance

The good news is that if you can identify the Performance Losses for an org./team then you can covert them into gains, typically of 7-25%.  This is the means of spending more time in the Zone of Peak Performance™.
